The Michigan Dogman, The Legend
For years... or centuries for the local Native Americans and their ancestors, these many legends of the Dogman have been passed down from generation to generation. Some say there are families or small communities of Dogman like peoples living in the rustic bush in Michigan and Canada. And there's the fact that we (as civilized beings) are always expanding our territories as humans encroach upon these creatures. But this expansion just may be the cause, or one of many causes that collides these two beings, time and time again .
There are some Native Americans that believe that these creatures are sacred. Other ancient stories speak of people that can at will shape shift into many creatures, depending on the person doing the shape shifting. Native Americans call these shape shifters "Skin-Walkers in Native American legend, a skin-walker is a person with the supernatural ability to turn into any animal he or she desires. Similar creatures can be found in numerous cultures' lores all over the world, closely related to beliefs in werewolves (also known as lycanthropes) and other "were" creatures (which can be described as therianthropes). The Mohawk Indian word "limikkin" is sometimes used to describe all skin-walkers. It is also known as the Yenaldooshi.
Other terms for shapeshifters include metamorph, skin-walker, mimic, and therianthrope. The prefix "were-," coming from the Old English word for "man" (masculine rather than generic), is also used to designate shapeshifters; despite its root, it is used to indicate female shapeshifters as well.

The Director's Notes:
All the legends surrounding Dogman represent a classic campfire story. As for the film, I think it has enough frightening moments, mixed in with real life relationships and situations to make for good entertainment.
There are woodland creatures all over the world that get blamed for things, and our character takes heat for his share. The actors really bring the characters to life and deliver a fun and fast paced performance.
The film really moves.

DOGMAN... The Screenplay
(Screenplay written by Rich Brauer)
Hanklin Purvis enjoys the outdoors, and he loves to hunt. He and his wife, Dorothy, live on a farm in the rural mid-west.
For some reason, during the season before autumn, things start happening. The first bictims are family pets, then wild animals. But it's not until people are injured that the police get involved.
The attacker is not human, that's for sure and it needs to be stopped.
Then they discover that the wounds have a deadly bacteria and the clock is ticking for those infected.
Enter Hanklin's neighbor, Francis Wellman, a Native American who believes she has discovered an ancient antidote.
And will they ever find the perpetrator of these horrifying attacks? They do!

Possible DVD ‘Special Features’ Bonus Material.

TRAVERSE CITY - Brauer Productions recently completed filming the official DOGMAN feature film in Benzie County and Director Rich Brauer wants your Dogman stories! The idea came to Rich after hearing numerous tales from people in and around Benzie County during the project. Brauer wants to capture these stories for possible inclusion on the final DOGMAN DVD. Anyone with a first-hand DOGMAN story should call the Benzie County Chamber of Commerce at (231) 882-5801, Mon-Fri from 9am-5pm, to make an appointment for a filmed interview, conducted in a private setting by Dogman songwriter/author Steve Cook who wrote the original song in 1987. To accommodate as many people as possible, each interview will be limited to fifteen minutes. |
The interviews will take place at the Best Western Scenic Hill Resort -- located at 1400 US-31 in Beulah -- on Saturday, November 5th, from 9am-5pm. Appointments are required! This is a first-come, first-serve opportunity for you to relate your piece of Michigan folklore, so gather your thoughts and share some of the mystery.
